Athletic Bilbao was formed in the early 1890s by English workers, then visiting the Basque city of Bilbao. It was also an English connection that made the club finally choose to wear their match shirts red and white-striped together with black shorts, inspired by the English football team Southampton. The home matches are played at Estadio San Mamés, with an audience capacity of about 53,000.
The Basque pride is great in Athletic Bilbao and the club has a well-known unwritten rule to only use players from the Basque Country in their team. Something they have chosen to live up to with great skill and good players. Striker Telmo Zarra is seen as the club's best of all time, with 252 goals scored in 278 games for Rojiblancos.
