The UEFA Europa Conference League is a European football tournament organized by UEFA, introduced in the 2021–22 season. The tournament is the third tier of European club football, after the Champions League and the Europa League. It was created to give more clubs from minor leagues the chance to participate in European competitions.
The UEFA Europa Conference League means a greater opportunity for clubs from smaller nations to compete on a European stage. The structure is similar to the other tournaments, with qualifying rounds, a group stage and playoffs. A total of 32 teams participate in the group stage, divided into eight groups of four teams each. The group winners advance directly to the round of 16, while the group runners-up get to play an extra play-off round against teams from the Europa League.
The first season of the Europa Conference League was won by AS Roma of Italy, who defeated Feyenoord of the Netherlands 1-0 in the final in Tirana, Albania. This marked an important milestone for the tournament and showed that it can attract established European clubs and create exciting matches.
The tournament has been positively received as it offers more clubs the chance to experience European football and compete for an international trophy. This not only strengthens the clubs financially, but also contributes to raising the level and popularity of football in smaller European countries.
