The club was founded in 1904 as Naples Foot-Ball & Cricket Club in Naples by English port workers. The club color light blue symbolizes the sea and the sky, suitable for the environment in which the city is located.
The greatest era the club has had so far was in the late 1980s when Diego Maradona was the centerpiece and driving force of the team that won the Serie A twice. The club's greatest success to that era had been two victories in the Italian Cup, 1962 and 1976.
Maradona was signed from FC Barcelona in 1984, for the highest transfer sum of that time. He was received as a savior and a front figure in Naples' chance to stand up against the northern Italy, with their great teams Juventus FC and AC Milan. And they certainly did just that!
With the small Argentine in the lead, the club won the Italian championship for the first time and the same year they also won the cup. In 1990 the won the Italian league again.
After the succesful era of Maradona in the late 1980s, Naples went on to tougher times. With poor financial results, they also lost results on the field and went down through the divisions. Napoli was a shadow of its former self in the late 1990s and ended up playing in Serie B. With the sporting decline and placement at the bottom of the second division, they also lost ticket revenue from the otherwise crowded arena.
The club went bankrupt in 2004 and was forcibly degraded to Serie C1. In the same year, the new club Napoli Soccer was formed. The big turnaround for the club came when film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis bought the club. He set the goal early; To play in Europe within a five-year period. With this mentality, the supporters and the economy therafter returned to stability.
De Laurentiis then also bought back the naming rights for SSC Napoli and they have been playing in Serie A again since the 2007-2008 season. The club has once again after that established itself at the top due to correct player signings, good coaches and with Stadio San Paolo, once again filled to the brim with the football fanatic Neapolitans.
Besides the football, the city of Naples is also known for its culture, food and shopping. Take a stroll at the Via Toledo shopping street, have an evening at the San Carlo Opera House, enjoy classic pastries at the popular Pintauro or take a guided tour of the underground Naples and round off the culture with a visit to the city's archaeological museum, filled with 26 different departments.
