Built on an old rice field in the suburb of Jiading District, the Shanghai International Circuit, specially built for Formula 1 and hosted by the Chinese Grand Prix since 2004, is located. 200,000 spectators can watch a competition around the track live.
The circuit is 5.45 km long and has a reputation for having the most challenging corner combinations of all F1's circuits around the world. An initial lap begins with 2 tight turns creating instant prestige and tight overtaking. During 56 laps, the drivers then compete to be able to claim the title of champion in Shanghai!
If you look at the track from above, you will see that it has the shape of the Chinese character "shang", which means upwards. Maybe something that the German track architect Hermann Tilke had a higher meaning with in the construction of the track layout? To give an even greater impression of Chinese culture, all Paddock facilities have been planned so that the F1 Teams each have a building built as pavilions around a lake. This structure bears great resemblance to the ancient Yu Garden, a beautiful garden located next to the City God Temple in northeastern Shanghai.
The fastest lap on the Shanghai International Circuit has been by German F1 legend Michael Schumacher, with a time of 1: 32.24. It was also here on the Shanghai International Circuit that the German in 2006 took his last Grand Prix victory before retiring from the sport. The British Lewis Hamilton has been at the top of the podium most times in Shanghai, six times he has had to spray champagne as number 1!
