Ireland Rugby

Rugby in Ireland has a long and proud history stretching back to 1854 when the first match was played at Trinity College in Dublin. The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) was formed in 1879 and has been the governing body of the sport on the island ever since.

The Ireland national team has been a significant force in international rugby. They took part in the first Home Nations Championship in 1883, the forerunner of today's Six Nations Championship. Over the years, Ireland have won the Six Nations title several times, including several Grand Slams (winning all their matches in the tournament) – most recently in 2018.

One of the most remarkable periods in Irish rugby came in the 2000s with players such as Brian O'Driscoll, Ronan O'Gara and Paul O'Connell. Led by coach Joe Schmidt, Ireland won the Six Nations in 2014, 2015 and 2018, with the 2018 Grand Slam victory a highlight.

Ireland have also put in strong performances in the Rugby World Cup, although they have yet to progress beyond the quarter-finals. The home ground is the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, while Thomond Park in Limerick is another important venue.

Rugby is a huge part of Ireland's cultural and social life, and the sport's popularity continues to grow, both at grassroots and professional levels.

The IRFU's work in developing young talent ensures that Ireland remains competitive on the international stage.
