The German city of Leipzig is located in the central part of the country about 190 kilometers southwest of Berlin. Leipzig's history goes back a long way and was granted city rights as early as 1165. Today, the city has around 600,000 inhabitants and is the eighth largest city in the country.
The city has long been an important trading city. Ever since the Middle Ages, Leipzig has played an important role, as the city is long at the intersection of two important trade routes through Europe. Today, the city has become one of Europe's most important cities for trade fairs.
If you like going to trade fairs, you should pay a visit to Leipziger Messe. This is one of the world's oldest fairs with traditions since the end of the 12th century. One of the most well-attended fairs is the Book Fair, which takes place for four days in March each year. This is largely due to the fact that the city is a historic city for literature with historical bookstores and printing houses.
One of Leipzig's main attractions is the famous St. Thomaskirche. This beautiful Gothic style church is over 800 years old. Many musical greats are connected to the church. Among other things, Martin Luther used to preach here. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played the church organ and Richard Wagner's baptism was performed here. But most famous is the church because the great organist and composer Johann Sebastian Bach worked as a choir leader in the church from 1723 until his death in 1750. He is also buried here. Next to the church is the Bach Museum, where you can, among other things, take part in the history of Bach's life.
For a fast-paced day, head to Belantis Theme Park. The amusement park opened in April 2003 and has more than 500,000 visitors each year. There are lots of attractions for both adults and children.
