Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is popularly known only as Rio and is Brazil's second largest city. The city is located on the country's southeast coast and in the metropolitan area there live about 12.5 million inhabitants.  There is a humid tropical climate here with the lowest average temperature in July with about 24 degrees and the highest average temperature in January with about 30 degrees.

Rio is a vibrant city, and people come here from all over the world to have fun and enjoy the heat and the mile long beaches. There is always life and movement on all the streets of the city and the samba tones flow in the alleys.

See and do

The biggest event of the year in Rio is the annual carnival, Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro. It is held in February / March each year, starting on the Friday before Lent, and ending on Ash Wednesday, which is the start of Lent. Carnival has been a tradition since the 18th century and is a folk festival like no other.

One of the highlights of the carnival is the mighty samba parade. It is a competition where the 12 best samba schools in Brazil compete for the prestigious title. The parade is held in Sambodromo Stadium and takes place during all five days of the carnival. In addition to the parade, there is a party on all streets and squares with glitter, sequins and feathers in abundance.

One of Rio's most famous sites is Mount Corcovado, where the famous statue of Monumento Cristo Redentor, the statue of Christ, stands and overlooks the city. The 30 meter high statue began to be built in 1921 due to the 100th anniversary of Brazil's independence and was completed in 1931.

The four kilometer long beach in the Copacabana district is a real experience. All kinds of people come here to enjoy the wonderful waves, have a drink in the sun or just enjoy the atmosphere. Just remember to keep track of your stuff! If you would rather have a little more peace and quiet, you should head to the beach west of Copacabana, Ipanema. Here it is much calmer and cleaner and has fewer people.

Food and drinks

Brazil's national dish is said to be the stew of feijoada. A typical feijoada contains black beans, beef or pork and sausages and is cooked slowly in a clay pot. Many different varieties can occur, but the dish is basically always served with rice.

The number one drink in Brazil is called Caipirinha. This is made from the domestic spirit cachaça, lime, cane sugar and ice. Cachaça is reminiscent of rum, but has a clearer sweetness. The drink is very common among the locals and is is often drunk with dinner.
