San Francisco is a city in northern California, USA. It is the fourth largest city in the state and is a popular tourist destination with many tourist attractions. The climate is pleasant all year round with slightly warm dry summers and mild rainy winters. The best time to travel here is in August and September when temperatures are around 25 degrees.
A famous landmark for San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge. The 2737-meter-long bridge that crosses the Golden Gate Strait to Marine County was at its inauguration in 1937 the world's longest suspension bridge. The beautifully located red bridge is a popular object for photographing tourists. At the beginning of the bridge on the San Francisco-side, there is a center with souvenir shops and exhibitions about the history of the bridge.
Another popular place to visit is the old prison Alcatraz located on the island of Alcatraz Island about 2 km outside San Francisco. The prison was known as the most escape-proof prison in the world during its active period, 1934-1963. This was largely due to the strong flowing cold water that surrounds the island. From the harbor in the Fisherman's Wharf district, there are boat trips every day of the week that take about 15 minutes. On site you can take part in fantastic guided tours in and around the prison.
Fisherman’s Wharf is also an incredibly cozy neighborhood and the city's historic center. Here you will find lots of old historic buildings and several museums to visit. The district has a fantastic seafood market that attracts both tourists and locals to the harbor. The harbor is also known for its colony of sea lions, which often lie and sunbathe on cliffs and jetties and is a fun element in the wonderful atmosphere.
In San Francisco, food from all over the world is largely represented, so it is not difficult to find something that appeals to you. Also, San Francisco's close distance to the Napa-Sonoma Wine Country provides an excellent selection of California wines.
A popular ingredient used in many of the city's restaurants is Dungeness Crab. This large crab is common on the California coast and is an important species for fishermen in the area.
In San Francisco, baseball and American football are the most popular sports.
The premier baseball club in the city is the San Francisco GIANTS. They play in one of the country's highest divisions, the National League, which together with the American League forms Major League Baseball.
The San Francisco 49ers are the city's largest club in American football. They play in the West division in the National Football League (NFL). The club has won the Super Bowl 5 times and had its heyday in the 80's.
